How To: Edit SWF Without FLA
Now it’s time to explore another Flash Decompiler’s feature. I believe it will be extremely useful for you because in case you’d like to edit some elements:
a) you don’t need to run Adobe Flash;
b) there will be no losses as this feature doesn’t require converting into FLA;
c) it’s just fast and simple.
I’ll show you that editing Flash objects (images, sounds, links, dynamic texts) and shapes (colors and lines) is a very simple task if you try Flash Decompiler.
Well, you’ve added your SWF file to “My tasks” and ready to start. (If you somehow forgotten how to do it turn to the first how-to in this series).
“Edit” tab in the main application’s interface opens up possibilities to edit Flash objects and shapes without converting to FLA.
- “Images”
Choose any image from the list in “My tasks” area. In the down left corner you see “Image properties” window. This is your aim. Within this window you can replace the original image with any other you choose, set JPEG or PNG format, modify quality and add/remove transparency.
(Please, don’t forget that our Decompiler lets you discard changes anytime.)
- “Sounds”
The same simple scheme again. Now you see the “Edit sounds” window where you can change sound format (WAV and MP3 formats are available), replace existing sounds with any others, set mono/stereo audio reproduction and define sound quality (sound rate, bits per sample, MP3 bitrate).
- “Dynamic texts”
Within “Edit dynamic texts” window you have plenty of customizable text parameters. They include: word-wrapping, multi-line text positioning, read-only text, automatic size setting, text selection, text as HTML, text color and aligning left/right, center or justify.
- “Links”
Very simple. Just set link location and link target within “Edit links” window.
- “Colors”
There is a great variety of colors available within “Edit color” window and you can replace or modify any color in your SWF file.
- “Lines”
“Line properties” window has “Line thickness in twips” and “Colors” options so you can change line thickness (from 0 to 999 in twips) and line color.
By the way, Flash Decompiler also has “Tag information” window. It shows you the detailed information about currently selected resource, resources it uses and what it is used by.

NICE WORK.
Can I do this with the Mac version? I have downloaded the trial and the interface is completly different with, it would appear, far fewer options.
@ Darius Poli –
This little tutorial is made for Windows version of Flash Decompiler. Of course Flash Decompiler for Mac looks different. Flash Decompiler for Mac doesn’t have the option to edit SWF without converting it to FLA, however, it can convert SWF into source code FLA and extract SWF elements into various formats.
The tutorials are very useful , but there is one thing i need to know that “how to edit the static texts”??
Really need your expertise , I’m stuck with a webproject, plz help …

@ man_of_promise –
No, you do not need Adobe Flash studio to be installed in order to edit sound in SWF file. Please send us the file you’re about to edit, and describe what sound you want to change as detailed as possible. Please specify Flash Decompiler version you use (and OS а course:)) Send all this information at support@eltima.com and our Support representatives will contact you at once!
it won’t let me save the file :(
@ iamnoman -
Yes, you can not save changes to your Flash files after editing them, this is one of our demo limitations. Anyway, you can view the resulting file in the main player window. If you’re satisfied with the result, you’re welcome to upgrade your demo an get the access to the full features list. Merry Christmas! :)
