Oliver Dreyer calls himself a “working student”, that means he is studying geography and working in an office (urban planning). He needed a software to sync his new Omnia II (running Windows Mobile) with his iMac (running 10.6). He wanted to sync his Address Book and iCal with cell phone easily (as a Mac-user he is used to everything working fine).

Alex Taylor: What challenges made you search for the software of this kind?

Oliver Dreyer: As the Omnia II works with windows mobile, the synchronisation with a Mac is not so easy. Some Samsung cell phones are supported, some not. So I was looking in the web and in some forums for good and effective syncing software. I wanted that the use have to be easy, because as a Mac user I’m used for easy software handling, I looked for software that was easy to handle.

Alex Taylor: How did you get to know about SyncMate by Eltima Software?

Oliver Dreyer: On the web I found a few informations about the SyncMate software. One page was full of good words about syncmate (http://www.pocketpc.ch/samsung-omnia-ii/). There was a short presentation and some users wrote some good words about the software. So I checked the website of Eltima and downloaded the freeware Program.

Alex Taylor: Did you try other products for the same task before choosing Eltima solution? Why did you prefer our product?

Oliver Dreyer: No. After downloading the freeware Program I begun to test it. I was convinced so I didn’t saw a reason to test other programs. Furthermore there were more bad reviews of the other software than on SyncMate :)

Alex Taylor: Please, describe how you are using our product now.

Oliver Dreyer: I use SyncMate to sync my contacts and my calendars between my computer and my phone. I tested the sms reader. It’s nice and maybe one day I’m glad to have it, but the to sync contacts and calendar is the most important thing for me. And this works fine and that’s great! It’s fine that I can see the protocol of the last synchronisation, so I can check if everything worked fine or not.
I work now with version 2.5. This version is pretty much better than the one before. I don’t remember the other version number, but I had a few problems with it (installing was easy, also installing on the cell phone was quick and easy. Most syncing went fine, but no new entry in the calendar on the phone went on the Mac. After more testing I found the mistake (you have to tell the phone in which calendar you want to enter the new appointment…. Here I’m not sure if this was a mistake of the program or of the cell phone*). But anyway, now it works pretty fine. It even syncs the pictures of the contacts in my address book, nice! The only thing I miss is syncing the pictures and the music, but for this you have the full version…
There is just one thing, a small thing that could be better: When I open the preferences I can’t read everything completely. Maybe it is because I use the German version. The sentences are cut because the preferences window has a fix size. Maybe one can change that. But as I say, it’s a small thing. Syncing works, the rest is peanuts :)

Alex Taylor: How did you benefit from using Eltima solution?

Oliver Dreyer: I only use the free version of SyncMate, so I can only tell about the benefits from this version. It’s great for daily business and so easy to use. I can make a new appointment on the Mac or on the cell phone, SyncMate makes for sure, that it will be on both after syncing. I can change an appointment, no problem, after syncing on both machines they have the correct date. The same with the addresses, adding or changing, no problem. So for me that’s all I really need. Now I prefer to sync also the pictures and music, so what I need now is the expert version.

Klaus Bohnen is a 50 years old Police officer from Germany. He is divorced and reengaged. Klaus has 4 kids and 1 dog. For over 30 years he was occupied in law enforcement, parts of this time in Special Forces.

Alex Taylor: What challenges made you search for the software of this kind?

Klaus Bohnen: A cousin of mine owns a small fashion label in Germany. He tried to build up a representative website with an E-Shop. He did know that I was familiar with the PC and Flash programming and asked me for help. I made a flash site for him with the help of an American flash designer. It was challenging and opening the FLA file via Adobe CS 4 to make some minor changes, like swapping pictures, was always a heck of work. I was looking for an easy solution and found it in Flash Decompiler Trillix. Now it was easy to swap the pictures, the sound, to edit the text and so on. It became easy. Right now with the new 4.X version it became much easier.

I am also using this program for a hobby website, where I did some Flash programming, for the same reasons: fast and simple, but very effective tool.

Mark Rydqusit is involved in various projects on the Internet from designing websites to most other online applications. Most of his online work is based around his own online business and he is a very hands on person preferring to do the work himself where ever possible, but he likes also to keep the learning curve as low as possible due to the many things he is doing at any one time. He has a broad range of hands on knowledge about the Internet and what can be achieved but he is totally self taught so would never like to be known as a professional. Alex Taylor: What challenges made you search for the software of this kind?

Mark Rydqusit: Adobe Flash is not the easiest program to make complex things quickly and I have found many fast solutions from other applications that can create fast and professional flash banners and websites, but there are some shot falls using these quick banner making programs, as many don’t give you all the original FLA files in case you need to do more or change things to the banner that the program can not do and I needed the master FLA files (with the ActionScript intact) to work with.
Needed a way to decompile the SWF with all the ActionScript so that I could use a different application with more features to enhance the banners more and that’s where Eltima’s program came to the rescue. With Flash Decompiler Trillix, it’s just a click away from a FLA master file. It’s like magic as the SWF combination and scripts are unlocked and all the original parts return to a master format allowing me to instantly get back to being creative and artistic rather than scratching my head in worry over how it’s all going to be possible. Mark Rydqusit: At first I was in a panic about not being able to do anything with a SWF file but I also asked some friends which clarified that it was a no-brainer to use Flash Decompiler Trillix for Mac. I downloaded Flash Decompiler Trillix demo just to make sure and was left in disbelief when in front of my eyes it took away all my worries and did exactly what it said on the virtual box!

Alex Taylor: Did you try other products for the same task before choosing Eltima solution? Why did you prefer our product?

Mark Rydqusit: There were a few I found during my searches but most were “win doze” and not Mac and when I looked at them they just did not have the reviews and polish of Flash Decompiler Trillix and being a Mac user why do I want to run a PC program if I don’t need to but I would have tested them if I had not found your program but I’m confident I have the best as there really can not be anything else if I’m getting the whole FLA.

Alex Taylor: Please, describe how you are using our product now.

Mark Rydqusit: I’m not really a pro Flash programmer and I prefer to use the fast track programs that do things quickly but their limitation mean I need to decompile their output so I can continue working on other programs to get my final result I’m using banners making programs and web animations programs mostly drag and drop but very effective end each program will do specific jobs easy for me but they only output SWF files. That’s where Flash Decompiler Trillix comes in as the link I need to transfer files from one program to the next without loss of anything including the scripts.

Alex Taylor: How did you benefit from using Eltima solution?

Mark Rydqusit: It’s unimaginable to not have this product now as I could not work without it. It’s a Flash designers essential item defiantly the top 5. I no longer worry about my FLA master getting lost. I can always decompile a SWF. The value in this product is amazing! It its one of those applications that stays with you on many different jobs I use it a lot.

David Witter has been a Mac user for more than 20 years. He is retired now but depends on his Mac to advertise his wine classes and rental of his apartment. He has an MBA from the Wharton School. He had his own wine retail business in Maine for more than 20 years, but sold it in 2002 and moved to Paris. At the wine shop he insisted on a Mac retail sales and cost control system, though it was much more expensive and the choices were few.

David Witter: I was given an HTC smartphone and then another gift, and HTC Diamond. I was very concerned about SyncMate recognizing the new phone, and transferring the information. It worked smoothly.

Alex Taylor: How did you get to know about SyncMate by Eltima Software?

David Witter: I searched the web for solutions, and came up with 3 or 4. SyncMate was one of them.

Alex Taylor: Did you try other products for the same task before choosing Eltima solution? Why did you prefer our product?

David Witter: : I looked at other products, including Missing Sync and PocketMac but was not impressed. I started with the free SyncMate, but immediately switched to the full service. I liked the uncomplicated user interface, straightforward and easy to use.

Alex Taylor: Please, describe how you are using our product now.

David Witter: I use it everyday, to sync my calendar (iCal), contacts (address book), plus iPhoto and iTunes. Other uses include syncing excel and word documents, so that I have them when I travel. It is easy to update them while on the road, then sync back to my Mac when I return.

I also keep track of my SMS and telephone calls, it provides me with a record to verify my statements. The syncing of videos and photos is very helpful, as well.

I take photos with my phone, and easily download them to my iPhoto libraries, or just to my desktop folders; it is flexible.

I was skeptical of being able to use a windows-based phone, and SyncMate has made it very easy. When I changed from one phone to a newer generation, it was simple just to add the device, and it recognized it instantly, and keep the old device in case I need it.

Alex Taylor: How did you benefit from using Eltima solution?

David Witter: I benefited by being able to do exactly what I wanted, with a great and easy to use interface. It has more available services that I need to explore.. I’m not a techie, but use the computer a lot. The technical service has been quick, friendly and very responsive. And the price is very reasonable.

Ian Lowe is a developer in The xPL Project. This company produces an open source ‘glue’ allowing home systems to share information and work together in an intelligent fashion. It allows home media systems, security, weather, heating, entrance, lighting etc to share information about status and events in an open format which can be easily incorporated into systems.

Alex Taylor: What challenges made you search for the software of this kind?

Ian Lowe: Many home systems use serial ports for communication. It is common for amplifiers, video switching equipment, weather stations and even some security systems to have a serial port which can be used to extract information about the state of the equipment, or to change its settings.

Additionally, many devices which claim to be USB are really just serial devices, connected via an internal USB to serial adapter.

It is common for our developers to build a cool new application for a device which they own, and then be asked to add support for a whole range of other similar devices – in this case, it is really useful to be able to monitor one, two, three or more serial ports to allow our software to simulate the devices being controlled.

Alex Taylor: How did you get to know about Virtual Serial Port Driver by Eltima Software?

Ian Lowe: I have been searching for some time for a solution which would allow me to re-develop an old serial application which I wrote across into .Net.

At the time I wrote the original application, I owned a PC with 2 serial ports – none of my current development computers have even a single serial port! The Virtual Serial Port Driver allowed me to add a pair of virtual serial ports which were recognized by my old software, and performed just like the real thing.

Alex Taylor: Did you try other products for the same task before choosing Eltima solution? Why did you prefer our product?

Ian Lowe: I tried a whole range of tools downloaded from the internet which claimed to provide a virtual serial port. Most of the tools wouldn’t even install on my Windows 7 machine, and of the ones that did, only the Eltima serial port worked exactly as expected – It was reliable and I could concentrate on building my own code, rather than wondering if the bugs I saw were a result of the serial port emulation.

I found the ability to add pairs of connected ports to be particularly useful – knowing that I can monitor both sides of a conversation easily makes development easier.

Alex Taylor: Please, describe how you are using our product now.

Ian Lowe: I am updating our serial bridge application (which is a VB 6 desktop application), to run as a windows service. the development used to requires passing data out onto the serial port and using another PC to read in that data. I don’t need that second PC any more. I am also adding support for additional devices, including an irrigation system for water management, a small LCD device intended as a general purpose home health and power usage monitor, and a multi-zone IR Remote Control gateway.

Alex Taylor: How did you benefit from using Eltima solution?

Ian Lowe: It allows me to develop software on a laptop with no serial ports, and to develop software using a single PC that used to require two computers and a null modem cable. The ability to enable and disable certain RS232 signals means that you can easily check how your app handles error conditions caused by a badly wired cable.

Personal Background: Eric Pratsch is a 4th year Systems and Information Engineer at the University of Virginia. He is working on his final undergraduate Capstone Project with 4 other Systems Engineers.

Alex Taylor: What challenges made you search for the software of this kind?

Eric Pratsch: Our capstone project is focused on determining behavioral profiles in a cyber environment. This is aimed at being applied towards cyber security. Our hypothesis is that an individual is unique and creates a pattern of decisions when navigating through cyber space. This pattern can be found through inverse reinforcement learning and behavioral cloning. Since our team does not have the resources available to have our own network, we decided to track a person’s movement through a shopping environment. All buttons clicked, words typed, and screenshots need to be recorded to have an accurate description of their behavioral patterns. With enough subjects we can also break down demographics to determine whether, for example males tend to exhibit behavior X more than females.

Alex Taylor: How did you get to know about Powered Keylogger by Eltima Software?

Eric Pratsch: I took a certification course called Certified Ethical Hacker when I interned for Booz Allen Hamilton last summer as a part of their cyber security cohort. Keyloggers and specifically, the Powered Keylogger was described in the course.

Loosing everything is bad enough but then realizing you cannot edit your flash banners, animations, or buttons later on soon tops the scale of disaster evils when one realizes the price tag of having a professional recreate the once easy to edit material. The clip is very compelling and we hope that it inspires our parents to see this program as something that will prepare their children to take part in the workplace of the future.

Steve Ruddy: By using the Eltima’s SWF & FLV Player to play what we feel is a very important part of our presentation we will benefit by having the source media and player right on the desktop instead of having to rely on a live Internet connection for the presentation.

Ing.Degni Fabrizio: Yes, freeware and shareware ones. I loved your tool because it is fully WM 6.1 compatible and highly configurable. SyncMate is a Mac tool, made for Mac users for WM devices not the opposite.

Ing.Degni Fabrizio: Now I am using your software to supply a basic WM integration on any Mac on my store and I am giving all the details on the final users to upgrade it to the full version for the best experience. Many users are bored about the big sync issues between the two platforms but now they know how to fix that thanks to SyncMate.

Victoria Veligodsky: How did you benefit from using our solution?

Ing.Degni Fabrizio: I can sell many Macs powered by Leopard (iMac over all) also to users with Windows Mobile devices. HTC is our first brand for WM platform and now we are glad to ship these phones to Mac users also.

Personal Background: Roland Chiu is an Assistant Professor of Toxicology at the University of Maastricht. Founded in 1976, it is the second youngest university in the Netherlands, and consistently ranks among the top universities in The Netherlands in terms of education.

Victoria Veligodsky: What challenges made you search for this kind of software?

Roland Chiu: I have a Windows Mobile 6 device which I previously synced with my Windows XP computer. I recently switched to a MacBook Pro and still wanted to use my calendar and list contacts. Though I didn’t realize Activesync doesn’t work on a Mac! Thought I’d have to buy a new phone/PDA.

Victoria Veligodsky: How did get to know about SyncMate by Eltima Software?

Roland Chiu: So when I got my new MacBook Pro and realized that my PDA won’t sync anymore. I search online for Windows Mobile to Mac syncing applications.

I came across several applications. Most of them were pay ones. However, I quickly found SyncMate and surprisingly, it was free of charge.

Victoria Veligodsky: Did you try other products for the same task before choosing Eltima solution? Why did you prefer our product?

Roland Chiu: I tried out several applications that I found online. I had the trial versions of your competitors. OHHHH what a disaster! Not only did they not work, but they were terrible to remove! And absolutely not user-friendly! However, your SyncMate was terrific! It was fairly easy to install and was quite user-friendly, though I am new to Mac.

Victoria Veligodsky: Please, describe how you are using our product now.

Roland Chiu: I am currently using SyncMate to synchronize my calendar and contacts on my MacBook Pro using Entourage. Unfortunately this wasn’t an easy task as you need to sync via iCal and the Mac address book. But now I can enter new agenda points on my server and have it show up on my PDA.

Victoria Veligodsky: How did you benefit from using SyncMate solution?

Roland Chiu: Maybe it’s because I’m new to a Mac, but this entire process hasn’t been particularly easy. Luckily, the help support at Eltima were very useful. Two correspondences with them and I was up and running. Thank you guys for such a great product and outstanding service!

Personal Background: In the past Björn König has studied media technologies. Right now Björn is working as an engineer for one of Germany’s biggest broadcast companies.

Victoria Veligodsky: What challenges made you search for this kind of software?

Björn König: I was in search for a software syncing Apple’s Address Book and iCal with my WM6 mobile phone (Asus P750). There are not many solutions available and SyncMate was and is free to use. That was a huge plus. So I gave it a try.

Victoria Veligodsky: How did get to know about SyncMate by Eltima Software?

Björn König: After searching the Internet for quite a while I came across several hints in forums and webpages. I took some time until I found your SyncMate. I’m not sure but I think I also read about SyncMate in my favorite computer magazine.

Victoria Veligodsky: Did you try other products for the same task before choosing SyncMate? Why did you prefer our product?

Björn König: Yes, I have tried several other methods of syncing my mobile phone. One synchronization tool I found did not work out for me. It was not able to exchange data with my Mac. Also Active Sync for Windows caused more trouble than actually doing its job. So I tried some beta versions and release candidates of SyncMate and it worked perfectly for me.

Victoria Veligodsky: Please, describe how you are using our product now.

Björn König: Right now I only use the basic features for syncing the calendar and Address Book. But as a beta tester I also checked out the expert functions which are pretty cool, too. They save some time exchanging data needed on my mobile phone. I also like SyncMate’s ability to synchronize notes and share Internet.

Victoria Veligodsky: How did you benefit from using SyncMate?

Björn König: Eltima’s SyncMate is an easy to use tool that gives me the capability to sync my calendar and address data between a Microsoft Windows Mobile 6 device and an Apple Mac OS X 10.5 computer, a feature that Apple probably will never implement.

Personal Background: Dinesh Lincoln is a high school student in Japan. He is a very busy person involved in numerous activities and now he is trying to organize his life with my Windows Mobile smartphone and MacBook.

Victoria Veligodsky: What challenges made you search for this kind of software?

Dinesh Lincoln: The main challenge was the compatibility. I tried BootCamp and using Vista, but that was just too inconvenient. This was the best software that I found that is most compatible with my smartphone. I was also a recent Mac Switcher, so not knowing what software was available made it difficult for me to sync my phone.

Victoria Veligodsky: How did get to know about SyncMate?

Dinesh Lincoln: After a day of searching, I came across this product at a weblog, DownloadSquad. They mentioned that there were other products, but I felt that this new upcoming product name SyncMate might have some hope. It certainly did.

Victoria Veligodsky: Did you try other products for the same task before choosing Eltima solution? Why did you prefer our product?

Dinesh Lincoln: The only product that I have tried is ActiveSync on Windows XP as well as Windows Mobile Device Manager on Vista via BootCamp. Both of them worked fine, but having to boot into another OS just to sync my device is totally ridiculous. SyncMate solved this problem!

Victoria Veligodsky: Please, describe how you are using our product now.

Dinesh Lincoln: Right now I’m using SyncMate in order to sync my calendar and task items with my Mac. Every day in school I receive more deadlines, and SyncMate helps me keep track of them at home without having to take my phone out. I also use SyncMate to keep track of Contact items.

Victoria Veligodsky: How did you benefit from using SyncMate?

Dinesh Lincoln: This definitely helped me organize my new MacBook. It also saved me the hassle of using a USB based hard drive or email just to transfer my Address Book and Calendar from my Windows PC to my Mac. It’s very easy to use and it gets the job done!

Personal Background: Biejan Poor is a 19 year old student from Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Victoria Veligodsky: What challenges made you search for this kind of software?

Biejan Poor: I have been using Mac OSX for about half a year now, and while I love the ease and user-friendliness of the operating system, it does present a problem when having a Windows Mobile based smartphone.

While OSX supports numerous phones through iSync, Windows Mobile devices are not part of them. Because of this issue I began my search for a piece of software that would allow me to synchronize my phone with my Macbook.

Victoria Veligodsky: How did get to know about SyncMate?

Biejan Poor: I was actually using another piece of software to synchronize my HTC s710 with my Macbook. This software, however, kept giving me headaches because of incorrect syncing of calendar with iCal. Eventually fed up with the problem it was causing I started browsing the web for another solution. Fortunately Google provided me with a link to SyncMate page and the rest is history.

Victoria Veligodsky: Did you try other products for the same task before choosing Eltima solution? Why did you prefer our product?

Biejan Poor: I have used another piece of software before trying out SyncMate. As mentioned before this product did not work properly. SyncMate, on the other hand, works exactly the way I want it to and since I got it I have never looked back!

Victoria Veligodsky: Please, describe how you are using our product now.

Biejan Poor: As a student I have very busy schedules for both classes as well as my part-time job. And while I have a laptop, it’s not always possible to carry it around with me.

Using my cellphone as an organizer is then very beneficial because it allows me to record my contacts, appointments and notes so I can download them on my computer back at home.

Victoria Veligodsky: How did you benefit from using SyncMate?

Biejan Poor: As I have explained, my smartphone is very important to me. I can schedule all my assignments, exams and appointments I have. I use it as my address book, to take notes and as a media player on the go.

Then when I get home it takes me just moments to synchronize everything that I added to my phone that day with my laptop with all my other stuff.

Personal Background: Patrick Weisser is a working as a instructor in a communication company in Germany. His tasks are to educate trainees in the world of IT. In the company they are using Windows, Apple and Linux to learn something about the Operating Systems.

Victoria Veligodsky: What challenges have driven you to search for a software of this kind?

Patrick Weisser: I switched my PC to an Apple MacBook Pro to learn something about OSX. I’m using a Pocket-PC-Phone at work and at home and I needed a program to synchronize my contacts and calendar data between my Office-Windows-PC and my home Apple MacBook Pro.

I know about Active-Sync from Microsoft, but there is no version available for Apple-PCs. So I searched for a product which would make this possible.

Victoria Veligodsky: How did get to know about SyncMate?

Patrick Weisser: I heard about SyncMate at an apple-community-board. At this time SyncMate had been in a beta version and I decided to try this out.

Victoria Veligodsky: Did you try other products for the same task before choosing Eltima solution? Why did you prefer our product?

Patrick Weisser: I heard about one software product, but it won’t run, because I’m using a Windows Mobile 6 Pocket PC which won’t work with this synchronization tool. And your SyncMate works perfectly well with my Windows Mobile 6 phone.

Victoria Veligodsky: Please, describe how you are using our product now.

Patrick Weisser: Now I’m using SyncMate with my MDA-Compact 3 (HTC Artemis) to sync data between my office-pc and my private Apple MacBook Pro.

This works without any problems, SyncMate is much better solution than all the rest, because you have more options offered and it is very comfortable in use.

Victoria Veligodsky: How did you benefit from using SyncMate solution?

Patrick Weisser: SyncMate is the software which realizes the possibility to transport the data from the Pocket-PC to the Mac or backwards. Without your great product I wouldn’t be able to synchronize everything I needed to. SyncMate is the best assistance for me.
